Sing to the Lord a New Song! Cult, Devotion, and Aesthetics in late Byzantine Poetry (13th to 15th Centuries), Austrian Academy of Sciences and Online, September 24, 2021
Writing, reading and listening to poetry was an important part of cultural expression throughout the more than 1,000-year history of the Byzantine Empire, including in the late phase from the conquest of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade to the end of the Empire in 1453. The poems of this time reflect the fragmented political and social conditions. At a time when it was becoming increasingly difficult to feel like a Byzantine, the production and reception of poems had an identity-forming function.
This workshop is organised in the framework of the project “Late Byzantine Poetry from the Fourth Crusade until the End of the Empire”, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (project no. T-1045).
PRE-REGISTRATION is mandatory for the online event.
