Networking Archaeological Data and Communities, NEH-funded Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities, January 2023–December 2024
The Alexandria Archive Institute / Open Context (AAI/OC) is pleased to announce a call for applications for Networking Archaeological Data and Communities, an NEH-funded Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities.
During virtual and in-person meetings over two years, participants in Networking Archaeological Data and Communities will bridge theoretical and practical aspects of data. Participants will have an opportunity to work with mentors from a cohort of expert Faculty, Advisors, and Core Team members as they develop ethical, feasible data management plans; make progress on a data-driven, digital research project for professional communication, public engagement, or instruction; and contribute to a new publication, the Data Literacy for Archaeologists Practice Guide.
Participants will receive a modest stipend for their participation in the virtual workshops during each of the four semesters and the two in-person, multi-day summer programs; additionally, the Institute will cover travel, accommodations, and per diem expenses for each summer program. Because we will only be able to fund a limited number of participants, there is a chance we may also be able to accept unfunded participants. If this is the case, we will work with you to advocate to your institutions for funding to attend the two in-person workshops.
The application is open to archaeologists and cultural heritage professionals from a diverse range of disciplinary backgrounds. We are particularly excited to encourage applications from graduate students, early career researchers, faculty, librarians, support staff, museum professionals, and public archaeologists who represent and serve underrepresented communities, especially those who may not have access to similar kinds of professional development resources through their own institutions. We will also consider applications from small teams of (two or three) people from the same institution or working towards the same collaborative goals when appropriate.
Individuals based in any country are welcome to apply, though the NEH Institutes for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities program focuses on scholars currently studying or employed at institutions in the United States. Thus, U.S. citizens and/or U.S.-based scholars will be given priority. International applicants and/or persons without a current U.S. visa should note that, for in-person meetings, a visa cannot be guaranteed.
Participants will be expected to commit to attending and actively engaging in all virtual workshops and the two in-person, multi-day summer programs during the two-year program (January 2023 - December 2024); they will also be expected to work with members of the Institute's Faculty, Advisory, and Core Team to finish up and share their individual projects and contribute to the Data Literacy for Archaeologists Practice Guide (January 2025 - August 2025). Participants will be asked to complete several assessment surveys throughout the program. Finally, all individuals affiliated with the Institute will be required to abide by the Principles of Civility for NEH Professional Development Programs.
