Why Syriac Matters, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, NJ, February 24, 2017
This workshop aims to highlight why and how Syriac matters today in many fields of research —Classics, Late Antique, Byzantine, Medieval, and Islamic studies as well as Sasanian, Arabian and Central Asian Studies, History of Christianity, Patristics and Church History, Theology, and Digital Humanities. Despite the significant work done by a growing number of scholars Syriac Studies remains a field with little institutional recognition. There are no departments of Syriac Studies and only a handful of academic positions designated for research in the field.
Taking advantage of the presence this year of many scholars in the Princeton and New York area, the workshop will provide a glimpse at ongoing research in Syriac Studies and offer an idea of some of the current issues and approaches in the field.
Thematic panels will allow discussions after brief introductions by the speakers.
