The University of Vienna seeks to fill the position from 01.05.2023 of a University Assistant (prae doc) at the Department of History to 30.04.2027.
Digital Humanities is a professorship established in 2016 at the Department of History at the University of Vienna, led by Prof. Dr Tara Andrews. Together with the university’s Data Science Network, we have been closely involved in the founding of the innovative set of masters’ programmes in Digital Humanities, Data Science, and Business Analytics. Our group’s research focuses on the ways in which digital tools and methods can be used to support and advance historical research. As a pre-doctoral University Assistant, you will have the chance to work in a cutting-edge and dynamic environment, breaking new ground in humanities methodology for historical research, and passing on these methods and skills to students in the classroom.
The employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of 4 years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.
Job Description
- Independent delivery of teaching offerings (1.5–3 SWS depending on salary grade)
- Participation in research, teaching-related and administrative tasks; (inter)national publication and presentation activities
- Contribution to organisation of conferences, meetings and other external activities
- Student support and examination activities
- Conclusion of a dissertation agreement in the field of Digital Humanities within 12–18 months.
The successful applicant will have a Master’s degree in a field related to digital humanities and/or historical studies, preferably with a focus on historical network analysis methods, excellent spoken and written English skills, and excellent IT skills, including experience with digital methods for the humanities, for example one or more of the following:
- Experience with Python and/or R programming in the humanities,
- Experience collecting and modelling historic person data
- Excellent knowledge of tools for network analysis, e.g. networkx, Gephi, NodeGoat
- Experience with Web visualization frameworks such as d3.
