The University of Vienna seeks to fill the position of a University Assistant (post doc) at the Department of History from 01.02.2022 to 31.01.2028.

Digital Humanities is a professorship established in 2016 at the Department of History at the University of Vienna, with strong links to the ongoing activities of the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage (ACDH-CH) based at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). The Digital Humanities teaching and research programme focuses on the ways in which digital tools and methods can be used to support and advance a better understanding of history. As a post-doctoral University Assistant you will have the chance to work in a cutting-edge and dynamic environment, breaking new ground in humanities methodology for historical research, and passing on these methods and skills to students in the classroom.

The holder of this post will also work within DiTAH (Digitale Transformation der Österreichischen Geisteswissenschaften), a project funded by the Federal Ministry for Science, Research and Economy. The project is led by the Karl-Franzens-Universtät Graz and partially settled at the University of Vienna; its aim is the construction and development of digital humanities research and teaching infrastructure across Austria.

The success candidate will prepare a habilitation project / second book, monograph or equivalent; provide scholarly and technical expertise to support the University of Vienna-based portion of the DiTAH project; teach (4 SWS); student support and examination activities; participate in research, teaching-related and administrative tasks; publish and present (inter)nationally; contribute to organisation of conferences, meetings and other external activities; and (contribute to) the preparation of third-party funding applications.

The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in a field related to digital humanities or historical studies with a focus on digital methods, preferably with a focus on on the medieval period (anywhere in the world); excellent IT skills, including experience with digital methods for the humanities, such as programming in Python or another programming language, web-based visualisation of historical data with toolkits such as d3, or GIS and mapping technologies; and excellent spoken and written English skills.
