This appointment offers an opportunity to join the Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology in the School of History and Cultures, University of Birmingham, and is intended as a six-month teaching appointment to cover staff research leave. Applicants should have a PhD in a subject relevant to Late Antiquity (ca.A.D.300–ca.A.D.700) or be near completion of a PhD, and experience of teaching in a university department or equivalent.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to courses at all undergraduate levels and, if appropriately qualified, to contribute to our postgraduate taught programmes. As part of his/her undergraduate remit the successful candidate will be expected to be able to deliver a 20 credit module on Late Antiquity and core Ancient History modules at levels C, I and H (i.e. 1st, 2nd and 3rd years) as appropriate as well as deliver appropriate modules on his/her area of expertise (see duties below) and to undertake associated administrative duties within the Department, and to enhance the Department’s reputation and effectiveness as a hub of teaching.

- Demonstrated experience of undergraduate teaching
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent IT skills in Microsoft Office
- Experience of and enthusiasm for using IVLEs in teaching
- Demonstrable skills in managing, motivating and advising students
Desirable
- Training in teaching in Higher Education
- Demonstrated experience of teaching at post-graduate level
- Teaching or research-related administrative experience in a university context
- A willingness to work to develop History’s profile both in Birmingham and more broadly
