The Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies is one of the largest departments of its type in the UK, with an excellent international reputation for research and teaching. The primary purpose of this fixed-term post will be to undertake the teaching of two modules (World of Orthodox Sainthood, second-year module; History of the Byzantine Empire 300-1453, final-year module), including associated assessment duties. The post-holder may also be involved in curriculum development, may be expected to supervise undergraduate dissertations, and also contribute to other modules within their area of expertise. The role holder will also be expected to carry out administrative duties as directed by the Head of Department, likely to include acting as Convenor on one or more established modules, and pastoral care (including acting as a personal tutor).
Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in Slavonic Studies, History, Byzantine Studies or the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience. They should also have previous experience of teaching medieval history of the Slavonic world or Byzantine history at University level. Excellent oral and written communication skills are also essential, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex information. Applicants should also have a high analytical ability to facilitate conceptual thinking, innovation and creativity as well as the ability to creatively apply relevant approaches to teaching and learning support.
