Staging the Ruler’s Body in Medieval Cultures: A Comparative Perspective, University of Fribourg Online Graduate Workshop, November 23–24, 2020

The Fribourg online graduate workshop (November 23) is meant for graduate students and young researchers who are presently working with the artistic, literary and political conceptualization of rulership in medieval societies from different viewpoints and in different fields. The workshop will be held on an online platform. The participants will be expected to single out in their papers those aspects of their specific field of investigation  which may contribute to understanding the ways in which the physical appearance of medieval rulers was visually constructed, imagined, communicated, and displayed during public events. The ensuing discussion will enable young researchers to enter into a dialogue on methodological issues with two keynote speakers, as well as with other senior scholars, who will be present as advisers and commentators during the entire day. The methodological workshop will be followed by an international conference (November 24) with the participation of prominent specialists on the subject of medieval rulership in various cultures of the Mediterranean and beyond.

Each participant of the graduate workshop will have 30 minutes to present his/her ongoing research, followed by a 15-minute discussion. The working language is English.
