St. Maximus the Confessor’s Christian Philosophy: Metaphysics – Ethics – Epistemology, workshop at the XIX. International Conference on Patristic Studies, Oxford, August 5–9, 2024

Within the Oxford Patristics Conference 2024 and on the double event of a) the 70th anniversary and retirement of Torstein Theodor Tollefsen, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oslo, and b) the release of his new book on The Christian Metaphysics of St. Maximus the Confessor: Creation, World-Order, and Redemption (Turnhout: Brepols 2023), the present Call  invites papers discussing key topics within St. Maximus the Confessor’s Christian philosophical legacy.

We would especially welcome contributions on the following broadly conceived themes:

  • Divine Knowledge
  • The Doctrine of Creation
  • The account of Logoi and activities
  • The theory of the Will
  • Universals and particulars
  • The Doctrine of Salvation
  • St. Maximus’ position within Christian tradition (i.e. Irenaeus of Lyon, St. Athanasius, Cappadocians, Corpus Areopagiticum, Leontine Corpus, Eriugena, Hesychasm).

What is the more, paper proposals on any aspect of St. Maximus’ thought, will not be excluded.
