Splendour and Spirituality in Armenian Christianity, lecture by Theo Maarten van Lint (University of Oxford), Bodleian Libraries, November 25, 2015, 1:00–1:30pm

Armenia adopted Christianity as the state religion in the early fourth century. Ever since the invention of the alphabet around 405, Armenians have produced brilliantly illuminated manuscripts. The Armenian liturgy expresses a profound spirituality through prayers and hymns of great beauty. It is celebrated in churches of remarkable architecture.

The talk will place the splendour of Armenian manuscripts and other art forms at its centre and so illustrate the different types of spirituality of the Armenian people and their Church.

The talk will be followed by a Q&A session.

Event is free, but advance booking is requested.

The talk is presented in conjunction with Armenia: Masterpieces from an Enduring Culture on view at the Bodleian Libraries, October 23, 2015–February 28, 2016.
