Space and Settlement in the Middle Ages X, Trinity College Dublin, March 22–23, 2019

We are pleased to announce the call for abstracts for Space and Settlement in the Middle Ages X, to be held on 22 – 23 March 2019 at the Long Room Hub, Trinity College Dublin. This year our theme is “New Approaches in Medieval Settlement.” Settlements are ever shifting aspects of the physical world, and they transcend a spatial relationship with the landscape and people. They define and are defined by socioeconomic structures, culture, materiality, identity, and heritage.

For the tenth annual Space and Settlement in the Middle Ages, we seek to understand how new avenues of research including technological and theoretical developments are changing our perceptions on medieval settlement and what it means for the future of the field. With the tenth installment of this conference, we hope to present new and upcoming research on medieval settlement. We seek abstracts from scholars of any disciplines and career stage covering any aspect of medieval settlement across Europe including but not limited to:

  • Built structures
  • Land/seascapes
  • Medieval versus current perspectives on space
  • Ethnology
  • Travel and trade
