Sinan Sertel Byzantine Material Culture Webinar "Architectural Sculpture", Zoom, May 19, 2021

Sinan Sertel was a promising young Turkish art historian, who we lost to a tragic event on the 19th of May, 2019. He was a member and the Deputy Assistant Director of the Olympos Archaeological Excavations and a PhD student in Art History at Ankara University.

Last year, in 2020, Olympos Archaeological Excavation Team and Bizantolog. successfully organized a graduate student webinar to commemorate Sinan and cherish his memory. The Webinar was dedicated to Byzantine material culture, Sinan’s research area, and fifteen graduate students from Turkey presented their papers on a variety of topics.

This year, the 2nd Sinan Sertel Byzantine Material Culture Webinar, organized by Olympos Archaeological Excavation Team and Bizantolog., will be held on the 19th of May. The organization aims to create a platform for the graduate students to share their research on the Byzantine material culture in and from Turkey while commemorating Sinan. The theme of the webinar this year is decided to be “Byzantine Architectural Sculpture”.

We welcome abstract submissions of 300 words from graduate students of Late Antique and Byzantine studies that address the webinar theme: Byzantine architectural sculpture.

The webinar will take place on Zoom, and each paper will be limited to 15 minutes, followed by a 5-minute discussion. The contributions should be either in Turkish or English.
