The Seminar for Ancient History at the University of Tübingen invites applications for three postdoc and one doctoral positions in the field of late antique studies, starting at the earliest convenience in 2023:
1 postdoctoral research position (4 years): History of the Sassanian world in its Eurasian contexts
The successful candidate is expected to undertake independent research on the history of the Sassanian empire in its Eurasian contexts, with a special focus on its relations with the Graeco-Roman world, leading to a Habilitation or an equivalent achievement such as a second monograph; teach 4 hours/week for 28 weeks per year in the position’s designated subject area; develop research activities in the position’s subject area, including the acquisition of research grants; and participate in research activities at the Seminar for Ancient History in relation to late antique studies.
1 postdoctoral research position (5 years): Migration and mobility in Late Antiquity
The successful candidate is expected to undertake independent research on migration and mobility in Eurasian contexts during the ‘Long Late Antiquity’, leading to a Habilitation or an equivalent achievement such as a second monograph; develop research activities in the position’s subject area, including the acquisition of research grants; and participate in research activities at the Seminar for Ancient History in relation to late antique studies.
1 postdoctoral research position (5 years): Eurasia as a contact zone in Late Antiquity
The successful candidate is expected to undertake independent research on forms and phenomena of contact in Eurasian contexts during the ‘Long Late Antiquity’, leading to a Habilitation or an equivalent achievement such as a second monograph; develop research activities in the position’s subject area, including the acquisition of research grants; and participate in research activities at the Seminar for Ancient History in relation to late antique studies.
1 doctoral research position (4 years): Religious change in Late Antiquity
The successful candidate is expected to undertake doctoral research on forms and phenomena of religious change in Late Antiquity (with special focus on early Islam), leading to a Dissertation; and participate in research activities at the Seminar for Ancient History in relation to late antique studies. The successful candidate will have outstanding university degree (MA or equivalent); excellent skills in Latin and Greek; and the ability to read texts in classical Arabic.
