The Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow who will take part in a study of papyri from Roman Egypt which provide evidence for the rise and development of Christianity. The appointee will have training and experience in papyrology, including the editing of papyri in Greek and Coptic, and a publication record demonstrating knowledge of religion and society in Roman and Late Roman Egypt. They will be responsible for revising and correcting transcriptions and translations where necessary; collecting and assessing bibliography on relevant papyri; revising existing drafts and augmenting them where appropriate; and producing the final version of the study's outputs in collaboration with the project team.

The successful applicant will be a highly motivated academic with a PhD in a relevant field, with specialised knowledge of papyrology, and religion and society in Roman Egypt. They will have experience of working directly with papyrus documents in Greek and Coptic, including experience in editing papyri; and in documenting and analysing the culture of Roman and Late Roman Egypt, especially religion. They will have a developing portfolio of publications in high-ranked journals or with prestigious publishers. 

The position is a fixed-term, 12-month appointment. The starting date is October 2023.
