Universität Hamburg Faculty of Humanities, Institute of Greek and Latin Philology invites applications for a Research Associate for the project “Etymologika. Ordnung und Interpretation des Wissens in griechisch-byzantinischen Lexika bis in die Renaissance”, a project under the auspices of the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg on Ancient and Byzantine Greek lexica.
The Research Associate will be responsible for
- Development (including adaptation of existing solution and implementation from scratch) of software components for the creation and online presentation and dissemination of digital critical editions with accompanying scholarly materials (both frontend and backend, as well as tools for internal use of the project group).
- Contribution to the development of data models and APIs.
- Independent software development as part of a small team in an agile environment.
- Cooperation with the scholarly part of the project group, both helping them acquire necessary technical skills, and further developing the plans for implementation.
- Presentation of results at conferences and meetings, including those addressing scholarly audiences with limited IT knowledge.
- Contribution to project reporting.
The Research Associate may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
The successful candidate will have a university degree in a relevant field, good knowledge of object-oriented programming and at least one the programming languages Java or Python, and experience using IDEs and other software development tools.
Also desirable are knowledge of at least one additional programming language, experience with agile and test driven development, thorough knowledge of XML, ideally including XSLT etc., experience with databases, experience developing web frontends, ideally using at least one suitable framework, experience administering linux systems, and knowledge of TeX/LaTeX. Previous experience working in software projects in the Humanities would be a plus.
The term is fixed until 2025-12-31.
