The British Museum is seeking to appoint a Project Curator to undertake research and improve documentation on the archaeological collections from Sudan and Nubia, in support of the Museum Operating Plan and all relevant Museum strategies. Support and coordinate access to the archaeological collections from Sudan in the British Museum through improving available documentation (catalogue records and imagery), and dissemination of research.

Responsibilities:

  • To make the collection acquired through archaeological excavations in Sudan (from the National Corporation of Antiquities & Museums [Sudan] and the Sudan Archaeological Research Society), and knowledge about those objects, publicly accessible via publication, digital, display, and broadcast
  • Creation and improvement of catalogue records, publications in printed or online forms, and presentations to various audiences (conferences, lectures, online), based on these collections and associated fieldwork documentation and samples (bioarchaeological, geological etc.)
  • Support public engagement events relating to these collections
  • To conceive and design small research projects based on those collections, and explore external funding for those projects
  • To collaborate with other institutions or groups, and to develop or ensure good relations with relevant stakeholders, notably the National Corporation of Antiquities & Museums (Sudan), the Society for Nubian Studies and the Sudan Archaeological Research Society

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will hold a BA/BSc (or equivalent) in archaeology, Nubian studies or a relevant subject. You will have experience of research and documentation of material culture from Sudan and/or Nubia and experience of fieldwork in Sudan. You will also have experience of editing and preparing academic publications and you would have publicised in peer reviewed journals on Nubian and Sudanese material culture, archaeology and/or history. You will be an open, effective communicator and a team player with flexible/collegiate attitude.
