The Institute of Egyptology and Coptology within the Faculty of Philology at the University of Münster, Germany, invites applications for a Full Professorship in the field of Coptology (succession Prof Dr Stephen Emmel) starting on 1 October 2019.
The successful candidate will have general research and teaching experience in Coptology and should be internationally outstanding in one of the following research subfields: philology, language and literature, cultural history, archaeology or art history. As Coptology is part of two degree programmes (BA: “Ancient Cultures of Egypt and the Near East ”; MA: “Languages and Cultures of Egypt and the Ancient Near East”), the successful candidate must represent all aspects of Coptology in teaching. Her/his duties include teaching courses in the amount of 9 hours per week, giving examinations, and participating in the university’s collaborative academic self-government in all areas.It is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to the relevant research centres of the University of Münster, such as the Centre for Eastern Mediterranean Studies (GKM), the Center for Digital Humanities, and the network Archaeology Diagonal.
Candidates must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field, experience in academic teaching, and the ability to pursue scientific research, such as is shown by the quality of a doctoral dissertation. Furthermore, additional scholarly accomplishments are required, such as are achieved by means of a Junior Professorship or employment as a post-doctoral scientific research assistant at a university or a non-university research institute, or in the context of scientific activity in business, administration, or some other sphere of society, whether in Germany or somewhere else. If applicable, she or he will be prepared to acquire good German language skills within the first two years of the appointment.
