The Department of Classical Languages and Literatures at Smith College has been authorized to hire a tenure-track Advanced Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure status negotiable), with the position to begin July 1, 2019.
Advanced Assistant candidates must have the Ph.D. in hand and at least two years of full-time teaching experience or the equivalent at the rank of Instructor or above. Preference will be given to those with teaching and research interests in one or more of the following areas: Greek or Roman material culture; race and ethnicity in antiquity; public humanities; reception studies; use of digital methodologies.
The teaching load is normally two regular courses per semester; teaching expectations will include courses in Latin and Greek language and literature at all undergraduate levels, as well as first-year seminars and Classics courses in translation according to the candidate’s areas of interest and expertise. The successful candidate will be expected to assume a position of leadership in the Department at the earliest opportunity, actively participating in rethinking both the content and the pedagogy of the undergraduate curriculum in Classical Studies for the twenty-first century.
