Macquarie University’s Department of Ancient History in the Faculty of Arts is the largest Ancient History department in Australasia with teaching and research programs in the areas of Ancient Egypt, Ancient Near East, Ancient Israel, Ancient Greece, Rome, Ancient China, Coptic Studies, Late Antiquity and Byzantium. We focus on the history, society, languages, religions, archaeology and material cultures of these civilizations, including papyrological and numismatic research. Our research is gaining global recognition, with the Ancient Cultures Research Centre and the Australian Centre for Numismatics Studies recognised nationally and internationally for their contributions to the study of ancient world history, attracting visiting scholars from overseas and collaborative research projects. The Department also houses a material collection for teaching and research purposes in the Museum of Ancient Cultures. We are currently conducting archaeological projects in Egypt, Israel, Italy and Croatia.
We are seeking an individual with an international reputation for high achievement in research. The successful candidate will have the vision and capability to lead our undergraduate and postgraduate Ancient History program and will perform a research leadership role aligned with, or complimentary to, our existing research activities, including building a research group and the attraction of significant research funding. The successful appointee will undertake a leading role in the development of the Ancient History curriculum and deliver key units within the program. The successful appointee will promote the Faculty within the academic and professional communities in Australia and internationally as well as contribute to the Faculty's teaching, research, program development and service at a national and international level.
