The Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track position on the faculty with a specialization in languages of late antiquity. The successful candidate will be appointed to a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professional Specialist (equivalent to “lecturer” at other universities) on a one-year contract, renewable for up to three years, with a starting date of August 22, 2017.  

Mastery of Syriac is a prerequisite, and facility in one or more of the other languages of late antiquity, especially Coptic, Ethiopic, Armenian, or classical Arabic, is also expected. The ability to engage not only with the language but with its attendant literature and culture is desirable; beyond specialized language course the successful candidate will be expected to teach one non-language course per year at the undergraduate or graduate level and will become an integral part of the Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity and History of Christianity subsections of the Department, including participation in colloquia and otherwise contributing to a vibrant graduate student and faculty learning community.
