Digital Humanities is a newly-established professorship within the Department of History at the University of Vienna, with strong links to the ongoing activities of the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities (ACDH) based at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). The Digital Humanities teaching and research programme focuses on the ways in which digital tools and methods can be used to support and advance a better understanding of history. As a pre-doctoral University Assistant you will have the chance to work in a cutting-edge and dynamic environment, breaking new ground in humanities methodology for historical research, and passing on these methods and skills to students in the classroom.

Job Description

  • Collaborative and/or independent teaching of method-based classes (2 weekly hours per semester)
  • Participation in research and administration
  • Completion of a PhD thesis relevant to the Digital Humanities programme in Vienna
  • (Inter)national publishing and presentation activities
  • Contribution to organisation of conferences, meetings, and other external activities
  • Student support and examination activities
  • The completion of a dissertation agreement in the context of the Digital Humanities research programme is expected within 12–18 months.

Qualifications

  • Master-level degree in Digital Humanities or a relevant historical discipline
  • Facility with computer technologies
  • Excellent spoken and written English and excellent German
  • Ability to work well in a group
  • Prior teaching experience is not required, but is an advantage.
