The Pottery of the Nile Valley: Classification, Documentation and New Methods of Analysis, Naples, July 1–12, 2019

The University of Naples, “l’Orientale”, announces the Summer School “The Pottery of the Nile Valley. Classification, documentation and new methods of analysis”, to be held in Naples from July 1st to 12th, 2019.

The Summer School “The Pottery of the Nile Valley” aims to give participants a solid knowledge and technical skills to classify and study the most important class of material culture in Near Eastern Archaeology: pottery. The course will provide an opportunity for students of Egyptology, Near Eastern Archaeology, Classical Archaeology, and Cultural Heritage to learn new methods of analysis and documentation of typologies, production process, and classification related to Egyptian and Nubian pottery, from the Predynastic to the Byzantine Period.

  • Predynastic Pottery (S.Hendrickx – Bruxelles; M.C. Gatto – Leicester)
  • Old Kingdom Pottery (K.Arias – Prague)
  • Middle Kingdom – II IP Pottery (B.Bader– Wien)
  • Late and Byzantine Pottery (J.Faiers–London)
  • Nubian Pottery (A. Manzo – Naples)

The Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) and the Scerrato Museum (University of Naples “L’Orientale”) will be partners of the Summer School, making their collections available to participants, for the documentation and drawing classes.

All the courses will be taught in English.

The Summer School is open to EU and non-EU applicants, with a BA/MA/PhD degree in Egyptology, Nubian Archaeology, Classical Archaeology, Near Eastern Archaeology or equivalents. The inscription fee is 500€ and covers the participation to all the classes and a welcome kit. The fee does not include travel, stay and meals expenses.
