Postdoctoral Position - Text, Transmission and Translation of 1 Corinthians in Coptic, KU Leuven lead image

The KU Leuven, Belgium, invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a 2-year 100% postdoctoral position (with the possibility of extension up to a further 3 years) examining Coptic manuscripts to study the text and transmission of 1 Corinthians in the first millennium. The successful candidate will form part of the research team of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) funded Odysseus project “1Cor – Text, Transmission and Translation of 1 Corinthians in the First Millennium”. The project is situated within the Biblical Studies Research Unit of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies.

Working as part of a team of researchers, the successful candidate will contribute to the project’s objective of analysing the Coptic (primarily Sahidic) textual transmission of 1 Corinthians.The successful candidate will  digitally transcribe, study and analyse Coptic continuous and non-continuous manuscripts and their text using digital images, databases and electronic technical transcription tools. investigate significant variant readings and their development over the first millennium; regularise and interpret abnormalities in the collation of manuscripts linguistically and text-critically. 

The successful candidate

  • has completed a PhD in Theology (New Testament Studies), Classics or a related field.
  • has an excellent command of Greek and Coptic (Sahidic); additional knowledge of Bohairic is desirable.
  • has significant experience with working in the field of manuscript studies and textual criticism and is familiar with the tedious scrutiny of variant readings. Experience with the technicalities of electronic editions is desirable.
  • has an excellent command of English (project language) and sufficient competence in other languages to access relevant secondary literature.
  • is enthusiastic about manuscripts, hard-working, organised, independent and cooperative.
  • is willing to work in Leuven and to travel on project business (incl. conferences). Experience with working in research teams would be advantageous.
