The MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society announces postdoctoral positions for the ERC Consolidator Grant Project 819368 DEChriM (Deconstructing Early Christian Metanarratives: Fourth-Century Egyptian Christianity in the Light of Material Evidence), led by Victor Ghica. Positions are available from from 01/09/2020. The postdoc will work under the direction of Victor Ghica, the Principal Investigator of the DEChriM project. They will work with the whole team, which includes four other post-docs, two PhD candidates, the project-manager, contract researchers and external collaborators.

Ceramics
The main task of the recipient of this position is to produce a catalogue of the ceramic circulating in Egypt in the fourth century, including both locally produced and imported material. This work-package will involve revisiting prior excavations in various areas of Egypt and re-examining the pottery yielded by these digs. The individual will also contribute to DEChriM’s database, including the management and population of the ceramic section. This specific task will also involve all the stages leading up to the inclusion of artefacts in the database. In addition, they are expected to collaborate with the other members of DEChriM’s team on various cross-disciplinary lines of research and contribute occasionally to other work-packages of the project.

Requirements

  • PhD in the field of Ancient History, Classics or equivalent
  • In-depth training in ceramic studies and research experience (PhD, post-doc) on Egyptian post-dynastic ceramic material; 
  • Excellent knowledge of other Mediterranean ceramic manufacturing traditions; 
  • Familiarity with the material culture of Late Antique Egypt; 
  • Solid fieldwork experience in Egypt; 
  • Very good command of English; 
  • Teamwork skills. 

Greek Christian Papyrological Documents
The main task of the recipient of thispositionis to identify and analysethe corpus of Greek Christian papyrological documents originating from Egypt dated or datable to the fourth century. The postdoc will also contribute to DEChriM’s database and will be in charge of populating its Greek papyrological section. This specific task will involve all the stages leading to the inclusion of artefacts in the database. In addition, the individualis expected to collaborate with the other members of DEChriM’s team on various cross-disciplinary lines of research and contribute occasionally to other work-packages of the project.

Requirements

  • PhD in the field of Ancient History, Classics or equivalent
  • In-depth training in Ancient Greek and research experience (PhD, post-doc) in Greek papyrology; 
  • Knowledge of the main papyrological dossiers of Late Antique Egypt;
  • Fieldwork experience in Egypt;
  • Very good command of English;
  • Teamwork skills.

Coptic Christian Papyrological Documents
The main task of the recipient of this position is to identify and analyse the corpus of Coptic Christian papyrological documents originating from Egypt dated or datable to the fourth century. The postdoc will also contribute to DEChriM’s database and will be in charge of populating its Coptic papyrological section. This specific task will involve all the stages leading to the inclusion of artefacts in the database. In addition, the individualis expected to collaborate with the other members of DEChriM’s team on various cross-disciplinary lines of research and contribute occasionally to other work-packages of the project.

Requirements

  • PhD in the field of Ancient History, Classics or equivalent
  • In-depth training in Coptic and research experience (PhD, post-doc) with late antique Coptic textual material; 
  • Knowledge of the main Copticpapyrological dossiers of Late Antique Egypt;
  • Research experience in the area of Late Antique Egyptian Christianity;
  • Very good command of English;
  • Teamwork skills.
