The Institute for Modern and Contemporary Historical Research (INZ) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences is offering a POST-DOC POSITION (F/M) as a part of the project "Historiographies of Early Modern Southeast Europe" (HEMSEE) for a fixed-term appointment of two years.
"HEMSEE" aims at creating the first exemplary handbook of pre-modern history writing in Southeast Europe. Taking into account all cultural areas of the region, the project seeks to combine source excerpts with analytical studies, thus taking an innovative approach to historiography. Funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the project is now recruiting a postdoc for 24 months, preferably starting 1 November 2018.
In close cooperation with the project leader, the candidate is expected to conduct the editorial work autonomously. In addition to the common tasks of text editing, the work involves refining and finalizing the conceptual framework of the handbook as well as coordinating the communication between authors, planning two workshops, and presenting the project at scientific events.
An applicant to the position must hold a doctoral degree in a field relevant to the project (such as History, Ottoman studies, Modern Greek studies or Slavic languages) as well as have excellent skills in written and oral English. He/she will have knowledge of at least one major source language (Slavonic, Greek, or Ottoman). Acquaintance with the methodological debates pertaining to historiography are desirable, as is experience in editorial work.
The candidate will have the opportunity to co-edit an innovative collective work, to connect with renowned scholars and thereby strengthen his/her own scientific profile. The Austrian Academy of Science offers outstanding working conditions and proves mentoring and relevant training opportunities for its international and multidisciplinary employees.
