The Collaborative Research Centre (Sonderforschungsbereich) 948 “Heroes – Heroizations – Heroisms” at the University of Freiburg is offering two to four scholarships (6 – 12 months each) for graduate students in its Research Training Group for PhD students.
The SFB 948 is funded by the German Research Foundation and consists of 50 scholars (15 out of whom are doctoral candidates) working in the fields of history, literary studies, art history, theology, and the social sciences.
This scholarship offers the opportunity to pursue research for a PhD project within the thematic framework of the SFB. The objective of the SFB is to understand heroic figures within their specific cultural, social and political contexts. Accordingly, the heroic has to be studied from a long-term perspective that is transculturally as well as synchronically and diachronically comparative. Our research specifically focuses on the tensions between the exceptionality of heroic figures and the social orders that they stabilize but also question.
International applicants with outstanding research potential are particularly welcome. They are expected to participate in the lectures and colloquia of the SFB and the Research Training Group. Graduates with a degree in any of the fields represented in the SFB are very welcome to apply. The time of the stay is flexible but should partly coincide with the university’s lecture periods (October – February and April – July).
The working language of the SFB is German. Therefore, the candidate’s knowledge of German should be at the B2/C1 level as measured on the Common European Framework of Reference.
