The Faculty of Humanities, Cluster of Excellence „Understanding Written Artefacts" at the University of Hamburg invites applications for a Research Associate for the project “EXC 2176 Understanding Written Artefacts” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Cluster’s graduate school and participate in research colloquia, lectures, and workshops. Furthermore, the position includes active engagement in the research field ‘’Notebooks’’, which in turn offers a great opportunity of working in an inspiring interdisciplinary team and to join collaborative research activities of the Cluster. 

The successful applicant will have a university degree in a relevant field. Preferred is a degree in Classics, Byzantine Studies, (Medieval) Philosophy, History, Manuscript Studies. Fluency in spoken and written English is compulsory plus an excellent command of Ancient Greek. Trained skills in Paleography and Codicology are mandatory.

We welcome applications for projects with a clear focus on the study of written artefacts and relating to the research scope of the Cluster. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • collections of scholarly Greek notes in the Middle-Ages and Renaissance
  • students note-taking strategies in Byzantine and Renaissance schools
  • teacher’s preparatory notes for lessons in Byzantine and Renaissance schools
  • reading notes in Greek manuscripts of Aristotle’s Organon
  • reading notes in editiones principes of Aristotelian works
  • blue prints and drafts for Byzantine works

The contract period is 01.01.2023 to 31.12.2025.
