The Faculty of Arts, Radboud University, invites applications for a PhD position to work on the ‘Mobility and Geography in the Byzantine World’. This project investigates the role of social and human geography and/or mobility in the Late Antique/early Byzantine world (ca. A.D. 500-1000) with a particular focus on the East and Constantinople.

We welcome research plans analysing the dissemination of geographical knowledge, or the imagination of that knowledge, within a broad scope of primary sources (both written and non-written). As mobility is closely connected to geography, part of the project may include the examination of various modes of mobility, travel, travel destinations and expectations, interaction of travellers and local populations. We particularly welcome the application of modern theories and methodologies in this project.

In addition to writing your own thesis, you will collaborate with other researchers to organise workshops and participate in the HLCS research group on ‘Tourism, Travel and Text’.

Eligibility

• a Research Master’s degree or equivalent in a field relevant to the project;
• a demonstrable experience in research on the Byzantine period/Late Antiquity; knowledge of the ancient languages;
• a good command of spoken and written English;
• good writing skills;
• the ability to work independently as well as in a team.
