The National Humanities Center offers up to 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities for academic-year or semester-long residencies.

Most Fellows are in residence for the academic year (September through May), though one-semester fellowships are also awarded. Fellowship applicants must have a PhD or equivalent scholarly credentials along with a strong record of peer-reviewed work, such as a published monograph or other major project. Emerging scholars as well as senior scholars are encouraged to apply. In addition to researchers from all fields of the humanities, the Center invites scholars from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects to apply. Applicants from all parts of the world are welcome; U.S. citizenship is not a requirement.

Most of the Center's fellowships are unrestricted. Several, however, are designated for particular areas of research, including:

Facilities and Services
Located in the progressive Triangle region of North Carolina, the Center affords access to the rich cultural and intellectual communities supported by the area's many research institutes and universities. The Center's home in Research Triangle Park fosters individual research and the exchange of ideas.

The Center offers private studies for Fellows, conference rooms, a central commons for dining, lounges, reading areas, a reference library, and a Fellows' workroom. The noted library service delivers books and research materials, and support for information technology and editorial assistance are provided.

The Center also helps Fellows to find housing in the neighboring communities.
