Munby Fellowship in Bibliography 2016-2017

The Munby Fellowship was founded in memory of the late Alan Noel Latimer Munby, a greatly respected scholar in the field of bibliography, especially in the history of the book trade and of book-collecting, to which his series of Phillipps studies is a most distinguished contribution. He was for many years Librarian of King’s College, Cambridge, and a Syndic of Cambridge University Library, and gave generously of his time and expertise to all who asked for his advice and help in pursuit of their researches.

The object of the Munby Fellowship is to continue his work by sponsoring bibliographical research based in the first instance on the collections of the libraries of Cambridge, and likely to be of benefit also, in the broadest sense, to scholars using those collections in the future. Within that general framework there are no restrictions on the choice of research subject which may concern printed or manuscript material, in any language.

The Library Syndicate invite applications for the Munby Fellowship in Bibliography for the tenure of 1 October 2016 to 31 July 2017.

The Munby Fellow will be free to pursue bibliographical research of his/her own choosing. It is, however, expected that the Fellow's research will be, at least in part, based directly or indirectly on the collections of the University and Colleges of Cambridge and likely to be of benefit, in the broadest sense, to scholars using those collections in the future. The Fellow will have no departmental or other staff duties and responsibilities.

The Fellowship is open to graduates in any discipline of any university and nationality. Applications will be evaluated by a panel comprising the Electors to the Fellowship and the following criteria will be taken into account, with preference given to scholars at post-doctoral or an equivalent level:

  • Track record of the candidate, taking into account the career stage of the applicant.
  • Suitability of the research proposal.

A non-stipendiary Fellowship at Darwin College will normally be available to the successful candidate, if not already a Fellow of a Cambridge College. Fellows in these categories are members of the Governing Body of the College and may take meals in the College without charge.
