The Department of Humanities, Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, invites applications for a 12-month postdoctoral research fellowship associated with the research program, Manuscripts, Scribes and Intellectual Networks in Crete (15th Century), under the direction of Professor Antonio Rigo.

The project aims at contextualizing the Cretan scribes' activity during the 15th century, in order to present their life paths and to reveal the dynamics of their network. The main goals are to illuminate the social history of the Orthodox and Uniate scribes of the Venetian Crete by following their traces outside the island, mostly in Venice and in Rome, and –consequently– to present a complete ''biography of the Cretan  scriptorium'', chronologically located between the late Palaeologan years and the first period of the post Byzantine era. In this perspective, the prosopography of the intellectual and ecclesiastical society of the island will be examined. Particular attention will be given to the individualization of these centres to which the Cretan scribes were linked, in order to fully illustrate the contribution of the Cretan intellectual environment to the preservation and transmission of the Byzantine cultural heritage.
