Manuscripts, Liturgy and Society: Byzantine Prayer Books as Sources for Daily Life and Social History, lecture by Claudia Rapp (University of Vienna & Austrian Academy of Sciences), Catholic University of America, November 1, 2019, 4:00 pm

Byzantine prayer books (euchologia) contain a vast number of short prayers for particular occasions in the life of a person or in the annual cycle of a community. This lecture will give an introduction to this rich source material, based on the work of the Vienna Euchologia Project, and illustrate its potential to shed new light on social relations within Byzantine society.

Claudia Rapp is Professor of Byzantine Studies, University of Vienna and Director of the Division of Byzantine Research, Austrian Academy of Sciences.
