Lost in Translation: Byzantine Lakonia & the Amyklaion, BSA Friends’ Lecture by Pamela Armstrong (University of Oxford), Senate House, London and Zoom, November 22, 2022, 5:00 pm (UK) /7:00 pm (Greece)

This lecture considers the results of the British School at Athens’ survey of Lakonia, directed by Professors Joost Crouwel and Bill Cavanagh, for the Byzantine period. A presentation of the changing landscape over the course of six centuries east of the river Eurotas, where the survey operated, is then anchored in textual evidence for the landscape west of the great river. In particular the site of the Amyklaion is presented as an important Christian religious centre throughout the same centuries.

Pamela Armstrong is Senior Reseach Fellow in Byzantine Cultural History and Dean of Degrees at Campion Hall, University of Oxford.
