The Department of History, Classics and Archaeology (part of the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy at Birkbeck, University of London) invites applications for Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships. These prestigious awards provide postdoctoral reseachers with an opportunity to undertake a significant project of original research and to progress their academic career. The fellowships are for three years and are based upon a matched funding agreement between the Trust and the host institution. Birkbeck is keen to build upon its past success with this scheme by selecting outstanding candidates to support for the 2020-21 call.

Birkbeck will sponsor two exceptional candidates: one working in the field of classical archaeology of the eastern Mediterranean (with a preference for projects engaging in Greek material culture, broadly conceived); and  the other in the field of medieval/early modern history (with a strong preference for projects with a non-European focus or which explore Europe’s global entanglements). If successful, the fellowship holder(s) will carry out their own research project and also have the opportunity to develop and teach advanced BA and/or MA option modules in their field of expertise, as well as contributing to team-taught introductory courses where appropriate.

Potential candidates must contact their preferred mentor in the first instance, ideally by the first week of December 2020. Candidates should work with their mentor to prepare a short pro-forma application which should be submitted by 1 January 2021.
