The Department of Theology and Religion, Durham University, welcomes applications from outstanding junior scholars of any aspect of the theology and history of medieval Christian thought for a one-year post. We expect that candidates may be specialists in medieval theology, philosophy or history. We interpret Medieval in a broad sense covering the period between the fifth and the fifteenth century.

The successful applicant will be expected to undertake research leading to publications of world class significance, to teach individually and collaboratively at the undergraduate level, to begin to take a role in supervising postgraduate research, and to play a full part in the life of the department.

The key responsibilities of the job will be in teaching (lecturing, seminar leading, course organisation, marking, and dissertation supervision) at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, research (writing and publication), and administration, within the team of staff constituting the Department of Theology and Religion. In particular, the successful candidate will be asked to teach

• the whole of a third year module on the thought of Thomas Aquinas;
• the whole of a second year module chosen from "Philosophy and the Christian Tradition" and "God, Freedom and the Soul" (previous syllabi are available on request);
• a short section of either the first year module 'Christianity in Context' or the second year module 'The Making of Modern Christianity.' (previous syllabi are available on request).
