Individuals’ Emotions and Emotional Communities in the Mediterranean, session at 56th International Congress on Medieval Studies, Western Michigan University, May 13–15, 2021

Papers are sought for “Individuals’ Emotions and Emotional Communities in the Mediterranean,” a session to be proposed for the 56th International Medieval Congress, to be held at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo MI on 13-15 May, 2021.

This session has as its goal to study emotions and emotional communities in the Medieval Mediterranean across diverse groups of various religious, class, ethnic, and cultural orientations. Papers will be sought which focus on the emotional experiences of individuals, whether in anger, joy, mourning or love, asking, for example, how these experiences or their expressions, whether in history, literature or art, were shaped by social norms and expectations and by the emotional communities’ individuals belonged to. Secondarily, we will ask if there is an emotional culture of the Mediterranean that transcends ethnic and religious divisions.
