In Church and at Home: Byzantine Prayer Books (Euchologia) as Sources for Daily Life and Social History, ANAMED Talk with Elisabeth Schiffer (Austrian Academy of Sciences), Ilias Nesseris (Vienna Euchologia Project), Daniel Galadza (Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome), Eirini Afentoulidou (Austrian Academy of Sciences), and Claudia Rapp (University of Vienna), Koç University via Zoom, November 17, 2022, 6:30 pm (Turkey local time)

For this month’s talk, ANAMED will feature Elisabeth Schiffer, former ANAMED fellow Ilias Nesseris, Daniel Galadza, and Eirini Afentoulidou. Moderated by Claudia Rapp, their talk will address Euchologia (liturgical books made for the use of priests) survive in hundreds of manuscripts and contain a wide range of short prayers that address everyday concerns in the lifecycle of individuals and families as well as rural communities. This talk showcases the ongoing work of the Vienna Euchologia Project that seeks to explore this largely untapped source of information for daily life and the social history of Byzantium.

Elisabeth Schiffer is staff member at the Department of Byzantine Research, Institute for Medieval Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Her research interests include Medieval Greek language and literature, as well as religion and everyday life in Byzantium.

Ilias Nesseris received his Ph.D. in Byzantine History and Philology at the University of Ioannina in 2014. From 2015-2022, he was employed as a Post-Doc at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in the Vienna Euchologia Project. He remains affiliated with the VEP as an Associate Member.

Daniel Galadza is a historian of the Byzantine liturgy, with a special interest in the development of the Jerusalem rite and the history of liturgical studies. He has recently been appointed as professor at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. 

Eirini Afentoulidou is researcher at the Institute for Medieval Research / Department of Byzantine Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna. Her research interests include textual criticism, language analysis, manuscript studies, Byzantine theological literature, and gender studies. 

Claudia Rapp is Professor of Byzantine Studies at the University of Vienna and interim Director of the Institute for Medieval Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
