Applications are invited for a Curator of Medieval Western Manuscripts to work in the Weston Library, the home of the Bodleian’s Special Collections.
This post has been endowed in memory of Dr Richard Hunt, Keeper of Western Manuscripts in the Bodleian from 1945 to 1975. The post holder will be one of a small team of curators of medieval manuscripts, sharing responsibility for manuscripts from Europe (including the Byzantine Empire) up to circa 1500. The curator will carry out a full range of curatorial activities and duties, including involvement in the creation and revision of catalogue descriptions of medieval manuscripts; the answering of enquiries and performance of supervisory duties in the reading-rooms; support for all aspects of teaching and learning with manuscripts, within the University and beyond; assistance with exhibitions and public engagement activities; and research on new acquisitions and existing collections. The curator will report to the Head of Early and Rare Collections, Dr Martin Kauffmann.
The successful applicant will an honours degree and a postgraduate degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent academic achievement), experience of cataloguing medieval manuscripts, and a reading knowledge of Latin. An ability to communicate with a broad range of people in presenting the collections is essential, as is a commitment both to the care of the collections and to a high level of service to readers.
