The University of Michigan’s Department of History seeks to fill a tenure-track position in the history of ancient Rome and the Mediterranean World at the rank of assistant or early associate professor, with the appointment to begin on September 1, 2017. This is a university-year appointment. We seek a historian whose research and teaching explores connections between ancient Rome and the cultures and polities of the Mediterranean and adjacent regions as well as the relationship of Rome to larger issues of world history.
The Department of History welcomes applications from candidates in a wide variety of thematic and methodological specialties. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research and teaching could contribute to one of our current strengths in the study of gender and sexuality, environmental history, and imperial and colonial encounters, or who could add to developing fields such as digital humanities or public history. Regardless of specialties, we seek a colleague who can contribute to the Department’s traditions of intellectual distinction, academic excellence, and innovative pedagogy.
