Hidden Treasure: Medieval Manuscript Fragments and Digital Research Methods, Universiteit Leiden, September 27, 2016
This colloquium is devoted to medieval text that is normally hidden from our eyes, such as palimpsests and manuscript fragments hidden in bindings. The principle subject matter is the manuscript fragment: paper and parchment pages that were recycled by post-medieval bookbinders and glued inside bindings for support. The colloquium aims to show that these fragments represent a stimulating topic for academic research, in spite of their damaged nature. In addition, the colloquium presents a new x-ray technique to make fragments visible without removing them from bookbindings.
