Sharon Gerstel will present the lecture "Hearing/Seeing in Late Byzantine Churches" as part of the Mahindra Humanities Center Medieval Studies Seminar series Hearing the Middle Ages. The talk will take place in the Lamont Forum Room, on the third floor of Harvard's Lamont Library.
Sharon E. J. Gerstel is Acting Director of the UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture and Professor of Byzantine Art and Archaeology at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her research focuses on late Byzantine villages in Greece and on the intersections of Orthodox art and ritual. Her current work in the Mani, focusing on the restoration of village churches and the recording of the history of their communities, is the subject of a volume in preparation.
