From Constantinople to Moscow: Geopolitical Landscapes of Capital Cities in Medieval Eastern Europe, lecture by Jelena Bogdanović (Iowa State University), University of Iowa, March 29, 2016, 5:30 pm

Jelena Bogdanović (PhD Princeton) is an assistant professor at Iowa State University. Trained as an architect and an historian of art and architecture, she specializes in the architectural history of medieval Byzantine, Slavic, Western European, and Islamic cultures in the Balkans and the Mediterranean. Her secondary field of interest is modern and contemporary architecture. Among her co-edited books are Political Landscapes of Capital Cities (University Press of Colorado, 2016) and On the Very Edge: Modernism and Modernity in the Arts and Architecture of Interwar Serbia (1918-1941) (Leuven University Press, 2014). Her scholarly contributions have been published in Byzantinoslavica, Matica Srpska Journal for Fine Arts, Zograf and reference encyclopedias The Encyclopeadia of the Hellenic World, the Oxford Dictionary of the Middle Ages, and the Encyclopeadia of the Bible and Its Reception. She contributed book chapters in several edited volumes in the U.S. and Europe including those in Hierotopy of Light and Fire in the Culture of the Byzantine World (2014), Egypt: Middle East in Focus (2013), Approaches to Byzantine Architecture and Its Decoration (2012), Djurdjevi Stupovi and the Eparchy of Budimlja (2012), Spatial Icons. Performativity in Byzantium and Medieval Russia (2011), and Dionysius the Areopagite between Orthodoxy and Heresy (2011). Her monograph The Framing of Sacred Space: The Canopy and the Byzantine Church (ca. 300-1500) is under contract with the Oxford University Press.
