ENCODE Workshop ‘AI and Ancient Writing Cultures’, Bologna, January 23–27, 2023

Applications are open for the ENCODE Workshop ‘AI and Ancient Writing Cultures’, which will be held in Bologna on the 23rd-27th of January 2023.

The workshop will see the participation of several experts in the field of Artificial Intelligence applied to disciplines studying ancient writings and scripts, who will alternate between presentations of existing projects and hands-on training sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with tools related to different branches of AI, such as pattern recognition, NLP, data visualisation, automatic annotation, tagging and linguistic parsing, and to discuss possible applications and future developments with experts. The language of instruction will be English and participation is possible only in presence.

Participants are invited to bring a set of data from written sources (papyri, inscriptions, texts transmitted by manuscript tradition...) they are interested in, but will also be provided with sets of texts by the trainers.

Participants of all levels are welcome to apply: BA, MA and PhD students, scholars, and professionals may all apply.
