The Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz - Max-Planck-Institut invites applications for a doctoral position starting in May 2019 or thereafter for a period of one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years.

Applicants must hold an MA degree that was completed within the last five years and must be pursuing a PhD project at a university. We invite applications from art historians, as well as those working in all related disciplines. Consideration will be given to thesis projects focused on all periods and cultures.

The Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz is an internationally oriented and broadly connected Max-Planck-Institute, dedicated to the history of art and architecture, with a focus on the arts and visual culture of Italy, Europe and the Mediterranean in a global perspective. The PhD project should relate to the research agenda of the department of Gerhard Wolf (Images, Objects, Sites. Mediterranean Art Histories in a Global Perspective), which centres on critically examining the methodological implications and consequences of the global perspectives of the discipline. Research within the Department is concerned with the new horizons of art history (and its related fields), transcultural interactions over long and short distances, and the interfaces between cultural heritage and environment, between ecology and aesthetics.
