The Medieval Institute of the University of Notre Dame seeks a new Director to lead a renowned interdisciplinary, degree-granting program that promotes research and teaching across the Middle Ages in its many cultures, languages, histories, and religions. The Director oversees one of the oldest centers of Medieval Studies in the United States, home to undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral programs, an extensive and acclaimed library, an endowed lecture series, and an active program of international conferences. The Institute facilitates the work of perhaps the largest contingent of medievalists at any North American university. Nearly sixty faculty medievalists from thirteen different departments create a vibrant intellectual community, while the Institute’s library collection and digital resources attract researchers from around the world.
The Director will provide intellectual leadership, develop and articulate the Institute's vision for Medieval Studies, sustain its academic programs, and grow its research profile. S/he should be a scholar with a roster of distinguished publications, a skilled teacher, and a leader with a record of administrative experience and success in securing external research funding. S/he should bring a creative approach to the future of the interdisciplinary field of Medieval Studies. The successful candidate will be appointed to a tenured position in an appropriate department of the College of Arts and Letters.
