The London Rare Books School (LRBS) is a series of five-day, intensive courses on a variety of book-related subjects taught in and around Senate House, University of London. London Rare Books School 2019 will take place from 17 - 21 June (week one), 24 - 28 June (week two), and 1-5 July (week three).
Our courses are taught intensively in small groups of no more than 12 students in order to ensure that everyone has plenty of opportunity to talk to the teachers and to get very close to the books. Each course consists of thirteen seminars amounting in all to twenty hours of teaching time spread between Monday lunchtime and Friday afternoon.
Digital Scholarly Editing: An Introduction (Week 2, June 24–28, 2019)

This course will survey the traditions and principles of scholarly editing and textual scholarship, complemented with hands-on workshops on the fundamentals of creating digital editions. It aims to provide an understanding of the history of editorial practice, including the study of manuscripts, the theory of copy text editing, and the decisions relating to textual and contextual apparatus that inform the design of an edition. Students will focus on encoding documents in XML using the standards of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). Students will also learn about Markdown, HTML, CSS, alternative markup languages (such as LMNL), and how to incorporate digital facsimiles into editions using TextLab. Students will also have the opportunity to examine rare books and manuscripts from the Senate House Library’s Special Collections.

Have you taken an introduction to the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), but are unsure of what to do next? Have you started a digital edition, but want to learn more about encoding, querying, publishing and analysing your project? Taught by several scholars with years of practical editing experience, this advanced digital scholarly editing module can help take your digital editing further, showing through several hands-on workshops how to implement advanced computational methods. Students will focus on XML technologies such as advanced TEI encoding, XPath and XSLT, as well as the programming language R to produce text analyses of edition data.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until a course is full.
Fees
The fee for the London Rare Books School is £650 for one week, which includes the provision of documentary material, sandwich lunches and coffee and tea. There is a further charge of £150 per course for students who wish to be assessed for credit offered by the University of London.
