The Library of the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW) at New York University (NYU), in collaboration with the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), invites applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities and Digital Scholarship. The Postdoctoral Fellow will collaborate with a vibrant and diverse group of academic professionals at ISAW and the NYU Division of Libraries to develop, implement, and extend new and innovative methods and forms of digital scholarship, scholarly communication, and pedagogy in ancient studies. We welcome candidates who hold a Ph.D. in any discipline relevant to ancient studies.
We are seeking a creative and technically skilled scholar to help develop and promote the use of digital technologies and resources for humanities research, teaching, and intellectual engagement. The successful candidate will be familiar with a variety of digital methods, have experience with collaborative digital scholarship, and an awareness of issues at the intersection of digital scholarship, libraries, and pedagogy. The Fellow will work closely with the NYU Division of Libraries, ISAW Digital Programs, ISAW and NYU faculty and students to support a shared vision for incorporating digital technologies in innovative, collaborative research, teaching, and learning.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will reside at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World and work under the supervision of the Head of the ISAW Library. The Postdoctoral Fellow will explore and make substantive contributions to some of the following project areas: digital libraries (e.g., the Ancient World Digital Library and Ancient World Image Bank); linked-data bibliography; digital publications (e.g., ISAW books and ISAW Papers); mapping projects (e.g., Pleiades); archaeological databases; digital preservation and repository projects for ancient studies scholarship; and international, interdisciplinary digital projects in ancient studies and the humanities (e.g., nomisma.org, Pleiades, papyri.info, etc). The Fellow will also participate in curriculum design and instruction, e.g., leading workshops on digital tools; working with faculty and students to develop mastery of tools and methods and to advance research projects; and supporting public programming at the intersection of ancient studies and the digital humanities. As a full member of the ISAW Library team, the Fellow will gain real-world experience with library operations, bibliographic and grant research, and public services.
The Fellow will be expected to spend, 20 percent of their time on their own research, writing, presentations, and related scholarly activities, with generous support from regular professional development resources. The Postdoctoral Fellow will also be invited to participate in the activities sponsored by CLIR Postdoctoral Fellowship program and the professional engagement and scholarly community building activities sponsored by the NYU Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, as well as similar activities sponsored by NYU’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.
Appointments are for two years, beginning in September 2019. Fellows will be appointed as “Assistant Curator/Faculty Fellow” and receive salary; an annual housing allowance; and professional development support.
