The Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences at the California Institute of Technology and the Research Division of The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens invite applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Instructorship in medieval or early modern studies under their joint research program known as the Caltech-Huntington Humanities Collaborations (CHHC). The position is open to scholars whose research broadly relates to the theme "Violence and Order in the Pre-Modern World." We seek applicants whose work engages issues of violence, power, and political and/or social order in Europe, the Mediterranean, or the Islamic world between ca. 500 and 1600 C.E. Scholars working in all humanities fields are encouraged to apply; interdisciplinary and comparative work is especially welcome.
The position begins Fall 2016. Appointment is contingent upon completion of the Ph.D. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct research at The Huntington, teach two (ten-week) undergraduate courses per year at Caltech, and contribute to the intellectual activities of the CHHC program at both institutions. Together with a senior fellow, he or she will also organize seminars and a conference related to the theme.
