Byzantine Archaeology and History Course, British School at Athens, July 23–August 5, 2023

This is an intensive two-week course. Teaching will be delivered in the form of lectures and seminars both in the classroom or as part of on-site visits in museums and archaeological sites. The language of instruction is English. Field trips will include a tour of Byzantine remains of Athens and on-site lectures at the Byzantine and Christian Museum, the Benaki Museum, the Benizelos Mansion and Kyriazopoulos Traditional Pottery Collection. Field trips and visits will take place at the Monasteries of Dafni, Hosios Loukas, Orchomenos and at the Byzantine town of Mystras. Students will benefit not only from visits to key sites and museums both in and outside Athens but also from unprecedented access to the BSA Archive’s ‘Byzantine Research Fund’ collection. This unique archive of architectural drawings, photographs and notebooks was created from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century by a small team of British architects, and records Byzantine monuments in Greece, Turkey, Italy, the Near East, Egypt, and Cyprus.

The course is limited to 12 students. We welcome applications from final-year undergraduate and from postgraduate students in liberal arts, classics, history and archaeology, and from students with no prior background in Byzantine studies wishing to take this course as an intensive introduction to the subject. The course is also open to lifelong learners, and is open to all international and worldwide applicants.

Lectures will be given by the course director Dr Rossana Valente (Newcastle University), Dr Vicky Manolopoulou (Durham University) Dr. Dora Konstantellou (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens). Guest lecturer: Prof. Rebecca Sweetman (BSA Director).

The course fee is € 950. This includes BSA one-month membership, housing, breakfast, meals as specified in the program, required travel within Greece, museum and site fees, one-year museum pass, one-month 24h access to the BSA library. International airfare to and from Greece, meals not included in the program, and incidental expenses are the participant’s responsibility.

The BSA offers one full scholarship, which will be assigned on the basis of merit and need.
