The British Institute at Ankara offers a number of different funding opportunities, grants and awards to support academics at all stages of their career. The following grants support fieldwork and research in Türkiye and the Black Sea region. All have an application deadline of April 17, 2023.

Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies Fieldwork Award
A grant of up to £400 is available to enable an undergraduate or postgraduate student to participate in a fieldwork project (excavation, survey, study season) in Türkiye or the region of the Black Sea littoral that relates to Hellenic studies (in its widest sense). Applicants must be undergraduate or postgraduate students based in a UK Higher Education Institution.

BIAA Study Grants
Support is intended for researchers to carry out periods of study abroad in the fields of the arts, humanities and the social sciences. Projects should be related to and/or undertaken in Türkiye and the Black Sea region, and should fit within one of the Strategic Research Initiatives currently sponsored by the Institute. Researchers across the entire career spectrum (from postdoctoral fellows to senior academics) of any nationality working in the UK or abroad for a UK Higher Education Institution, as well as researchers directing projects that are formally and demonstrably based in the UK, are eligible to apply for a BIAA Study Grant. 

BIAA Doughty-Wylie Scholarship
Two grants of up to £1,000 each are available to support postgraduate students in any field of the arts, humanities and social sciences to participate in fieldwork or other research activity in Türkiye. In addition to the grant, the BIAA will offer successful applicants free accommodation at the BIAA hostel in Ankara. Applicants should be British citizens enrolled on a Master’s or PhD programme at a recognised UK Higher Education Institution.

BIAA David Edwin Jameson Scholarship
The BIAA has established a scholarship of £1,000 in memory of David Edwin Jameson, who worked in Türkiye with the support of the Institute in 1961, and was greatly impacted by the country and its people. Thanks to generous funds donated by his sister Shelagh, this scholarship will support doctoral candidates who wish to undertake fieldwork in Türkiye. The scholarship is intended to fund fieldwork relating to the study of the region during the Greek, Roman, or Byzantine periods. Applicants should be enrolled in a PhD programme at a recognised UK Higher Education Institution.

BIAA David French Scholarship
In memory of archaeologist Dr David French, Director of the British Institute at Ankara from 1968 to 1994 and indefatigable explorer of Türkiye ancient and modern, his family have established two scholarships to be administered by the Institute. Two travel grants of up to £1,000 each are available to support undergraduate or postgraduate students to develop knowledge and understanding of the region’s history, geography, culture and environment. Applications relating to an individual’s first visit to Türkiye for study purposes will be particularly welcomed. Applicants should be enrolled on a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme at a recognised UK Higher Education Institution.
